This workshop session is aimed at youngsters and adults, devoted to the magical world of invented, found and homemade musical instruments. Hosted by Phil Dadson (left) and Adrian Croucher (mid-right), of NZ’s legendary From Scratch group, the workshop will introduce a wide range of DIY instrument ideas for exploration and development.

Workshop #1:
Participants will be introduced to an inspiring mix of instrument
ideas and basic acoustic principles, with a range of surprising and
sometimes familiar sound-making materials and sonic objects.
Families welcome.

We’re home to artist studios, our very own cafe, art classes for adults, youth and children, and an ever-changing programme of exhibitions and events.

Set within park-like grounds amongst historic winery buildings. Open Monday to Saturday, entry is free, everybody’s welcome.

Very interesting, entertaining and informative workshop. Phil is very creative and inventive! He is also a great teacher and his passion for music and instrument making is infectious. We felt enriched and inspired. Thank you!

Excellent workshop covering the physics of music in a very accessible way, and giving participants the knowledge to create their own instruments from very basic materials. Possibly a little long for very young children. Getting to try the coat hanger instrument really made an impact; perhaps having more of these hands on experiences interspersed throughout the talk could be beneficial?

Phil Dadson was an awesome presenter today. His years of experience in making and playing found, made and traditional instruments to get a variety of sounds was quite astounding at times. We really appreciated his enthusiasm for getting authentic sounds out of natural instruments. I went away with heaps of inspiration to find some new instruments to play and make. Thanks Phil.

  • A deposit is required to secure your place and payment must be made in full to confirm your booking.
  • Cancellation by Corban Estate Arts Centre entitles the participant to a FULL REFUND.
  • Cancellation by participant up until 7 days before the workshop commences results in a transfer where possible OR full credit to be used within 6 months of cancellation date OR a full refund MINUS a 10% admin & booking fee.
  • Cancellation by participant within 7 days of the workshop commencement date results in a transfer where possible OR full credit to be used within 6 months of cancellation date OR a full refund MINUS a 30% admin & booking fee.
  • Cancellation by participant on or after the workshop commencement date results in NO refund given.

  • A deposit is required to secure your place and payment must be made in full to confirm your booking. Part Payment options are available at time of booking.
  • Cancellation by Corban Estate Arts Centre entitles the participant to a FULL REFUND.
  • Cancellation by participant up until 10 days before the workshop commences results in a full refund of amount paid MINUS a 10% admin & booking fee.
  • Cancellation by participant within 10 days or on or after the workshop commencement date results in NO refund given. You may nominate someone else to take your place before the class starts.
