Smartphone Cinema Secrets: Making Movies with Your Mobile

Smartphone Cinema has established a strong foothold in the area of visual storytelling with emerging media. In this Smartphone Cinema workshop you will learn cinematic skills and how to use a variety of apps to set your mobile movie apart. This workshop will introduce you to the technical and storytelling skills you need to make a movie with your mobile device, and then guide you through the process of planning, shooting and editing your own film. 

Daniel Wagner has been involved in film, television and radio media for many years. He has worked extensively in America in a range of roles which include creating a social-change focused TV station in Los Angeles. Today, Daniel is a Senior Lecturer in Cinematography with the School of Creative Industries at Unitec.

NB: Participants will need to provide their own video-capable smart phone. This should be no more than three years old and have at least 50 GB of available storage.

We’re home to artist studios, our very own cafe, art classes for adults, youth and children, and an ever-changing programme of exhibitions and events.

Set within park-like grounds amongst historic winery buildings. Open Monday to Saturday, entry is free, everybody’s welcome.

Last week I attended the Smartphone Cinema Secrets with your Mobile with tutor Daniel Wagner. This was a wonderful, very informative week. We each made a short movie, and learnt new technology. Daniel shared his vast knowledge with us & very patiently attended to all our questions. I highly recommend this course and will use everything I learnt to make short movies in the future. The Corbans Estate grounds provided all the possibilities for shooting interesting footage. The staff were excellent. The only drawback was the wireless connection which varied each day. Otherwise I really appreciate the thoughtful presentation Daniel offered us.

Over all, it was great. Dan is a professional, skilled, passionate, generous, patient tutor. His knowledge in his field is extensive and global. The course was a comprehensive blend of creative approach and technical application. Our individual learning requirements were at mixed levels which required a daily fluidity to the course structure to facilitate the mix- willingly done. Relevant resources were always available/found and updated daily as per our needs. There were time consuming glitches with android phones not being able to download one of the two programs- IOS had no problems. So was it worth it? Definitely. The learning outcomes can be applied to everything from modest home productions to professional projects- Dan was encouraging in all areas. The introduction to international smart phone film festivals was inspirational and door opening for me. As a relatively new smart phone user another few days would have been perfect, but I left at a comfortable level to move forward. The facilities are clean, the campus and staff welcoming, with inclusive extramural tours and events. The grounds and environs are fascinating and beautiful. The coffee is great! Yes, do it.

  • A deposit is required to secure your place and payment must be made in full to confirm your booking.
  • Cancellation by Corban Estate Arts Centre entitles the participant to a FULL REFUND.
  • Cancellation by participant up until 7 days before the workshop commences results in a transfer where possible OR full credit to be used within 6 months of cancellation date OR a full refund MINUS a 10% admin & booking fee.
  • Cancellation by participant within 7 days of the workshop commencement date results in a transfer where possible OR full credit to be used within 6 months of cancellation date OR a full refund MINUS a 30% admin & booking fee.
  • Cancellation by participant on or after the workshop commencement date results in NO refund given.

  • A deposit is required to secure your place and payment must be made in full to confirm your booking. Part Payment options are available at time of booking.
  • Cancellation by Corban Estate Arts Centre entitles the participant to a FULL REFUND.
  • Cancellation by participant up until 10 days before the workshop commences results in a full refund of amount paid MINUS a 10% admin & booking fee.
  • Cancellation by participant within 10 days or on or after the workshop commencement date results in NO refund given. You may nominate someone else to take your place before the class starts.
