20 January 2020 • Introduction to Carving

Introduction to Carving: I took this Carving Course not only for myself to learn but also to help me teach/learn with my College Maori & Pacifica Students. I enjoyed the company of others just like myself taking this Course in wanting to learn this art of Carving. We were taught H & S and the safe use of the Tools and Equipment. The class was taught the basics of how to actually carve our individual "patterns" on our hoe/paddle. Our Tutors were most helpful throughout the four days, always encouraging and offering suggestions whenever we were unsure of the next step. We concluded our course with our newly carved hoe in a "Waka Haka" for the other students also completing their courses. Lots of fun, enjoyed by all. I would recommend this course to anyone who loves working with wood. In closing, I would like to mention the Staff of the Corban Estate Arts Centre. What helpful and friendly people they are; we were treated to a lovely "Morning Tea/Coffee" welcome and a lovely end of course get together of music, finger food and drinks. Arohanui Brian

Excellent 4 day workshop learning how to carve a Maori paddle. Good selection of timber and tools to work with, and a fun group of people. I always love learning in a class/group situation, where everyone can share their knowledge. Looking forward to the next workshop.

Kia ora Koutou; I just spent a week with a bunch of super cool people and Wikuki making waka hoe. It was an awesome experience; especially working with wood from the amazon jungle! Definitely recommend going and I’ll be back for my third time next year..... love it so much! Mauri ora Mike Carswell
